Tarrant County Democratic Woman's Club

Margaret Carter Scholarship

Upon Mrs. Carter's death in 1988, the TCDWC wished to honor the memory of a very active member and past President who was one of the moving forces in Texas Democratic politics. A member of TCDWC since the early 1940's, Mrs. Carter, once called the "Grand Dame of Liberal Texas Politics", was the one who gave many Texas women the courage and drive to participate in politics. She was their mentor and the mentor of many minority voters.

Active not only in Democratic politics, but many other activities as well, Mrs. Carter and her husband, Jack, were instrumental in founding the Fort Worth chapter of the NAACP; and Mrs. Carter was an active member of the League of Women Voters. Many of the people active in Tarrant County politics depended on Mrs. Carter as their guide. She was said to have been the one person to ask about precinct organization as well as state and local party rules. We are proud to have had her leadership and hope through this scholarship, encourage young women to enter the political arena.
